Om oss/About us

About the conference:

Oslo Metropolitan University is committed to both teaching and researching topics related to cities and urban development. Therefore, in 2019, we established an annual conference on the unique challenges of the metropolis – the Urban Research Conference, now a signature conference for our university.

The conference brings together experts, practitioners, academics, and students to discuss urban challenges, possible solutions, and the role of academia in the metropolis.

The welfare state faces many challenges, such as demographic changes, economic uncertainty, and increasing social inequality. In the big cities, we find both the very poorest and the very richest among us, as well as all societal layers in between. Therefore, welfare challenges such as social exclusion, inequality, segregation, and marginalization, are particularly visible in cities.

The Urban Research Conference seeks both to discuss the most pressing urban challenges and to examine how universities, through practical approaches, can contribute to positive urban development. This means that we aim to contribute to creating pleasant, viable, inclusive, and sustainable cities.

The Urban Research Conference provides yearly research-based insights into what the challenges look like and how they can be resolved. The overarching themes for the conferences change in line with knowledge needs and the academic agenda.

For Oslo Metropolitan University it is important that the university is a place where knowledge is developed, exchanged, and challenged, so that we create new insights together. This is what the Urban Research Conference is all about.
